How to use essential oils: Internal Use
Well today we are diving into the deep end!
Yep, that’s right!
Internal Use of essential oils, aka eating, drinking or ingesting essential oils.
Is it safe. Am I crazy, why would I even want to do such a thing?!
I totally and completely understand all of the fear, hesitation and confusion surrounding using oils internally, such as adding to a drink, veggie cap or soft-gel. So today, I’m sharing my story, but just know in our wonderful oil community, we love to provide science based evidence and give you the resources to enjoy doTERRA, in whichever way you choose! Your health and wellness does not depend on drinking an oil! But if you are interested in this topic, and new ways to enjoy the benefits of oils including internal use…read on!
Know your oils. CPTG (certified, pure, therapeutic grade) this is the highest standard for sourcing, purity and safety of essential oils. Only choose doTERRA, bought directly from them through your whole account. For more info on how doTERRA sources and tests their oils click here.
I was introduced to doTERRA, and the concept of adding an oil to my water when I was 5 months pregnant. Understandably, I decided not to drink the oils immediately, as I wanted to do a little research – in fact I thought it was unnecessary and potentially harmful, so I was a little confused. I felt the same way about McDonald’s, Coca Cola and Margarine…so you know I was a tad fussy!
One of the symptoms of my pregnancy was constipation (sorry if you prefer not to speak about your bowels…!) and with my last pregnancy I had once gone 5 days without passing a stool!! So, when I read about using ZenGest oil in my drinking water to support digestion, I was interested. One day, when I was in a little discomfort with this issue, I decided to drink some water with one drop ZenGest. By this point I understood that an oil was the immune system of a plant, and that consuming these compounds was similar to eating the food. In ZenGest you are getting Anise Seed, Peppermint Plant, Ginger Rhizome/Root, Caraway Seed, Coriander Seed, Tarragon Plant, and Fennel Seed essential oils…all edible in their natural form.
So, I decided I was ready to try this! And let’s just say 24 hours later I was a new woman!! Ha.
From this first successful experienced, I began trying oils this way a little more. In my cooking, in my drinks and at times in a veggie cap. I also really enjoy adding a drop of citrus oil to half a spoonful of liquid stevia and mixing this with sparkling water. Delicious.
